I've been a big fan of the DD webcomic for awhile now...But I have to say, everyone here is so critical of Mookie's works. Insulting his art, his storylines, whining about too much this, or not enough that.

If you want to be so critical, YOU try doing a webcomic that goes on this long, and YOU try to keep a huge storyline intact throughout it.

Sure, Dominic is a bit self-centered, but it would be hard not to be if you could see the future. If you could manipulate people like that, without even trying that hard, would you?

Saying stuff like "Too much drama!" and being overly critical of Mookie's work seems to be...well, unfair. I mean, he works hard on this webcomic, having to balance it between his real life, and you people. For ONCE, I'd like to see someone PRAISING what Mookie does. He's a better writer than I am, and a FAR better artist. Just my two cents.

Is that a challenge?

Edit: I ask merely because if one isn't allowed to criticize a comic because the person hasn't made one, does that mean praising it also requires the effort in making one too?

Just because I don't shoot movies, does that mean I shouldn't say bad things about Lindsay Lohan movies?

I think the main problem people have with this is not that he manipulates things (although depending on the situation it can be pretty bad), but the fact that when he does things like manipulate events and people to go the way he wants, he relies solely on his ability to predict the way things will go, rather than do sensible things, like move people who might be caught in the crossfire to safety. And even after all is said and done, there's next to no repercussions. Just about every time, everybody is essentially saying "Oh Dominic, you're so awesome! It doesn't matter that you put peoples lives in danger just to feel the thrill of manipulation. I still love you!!!"

Take the Snowsong arc for example. Dominic went through a ton of manipulation just to let Gregory live out a childhood superhero fantasy, without evacuating the town. Think about it. What would have happened if Dominic had made a slight miscalculation and that ice golem near the end of the arc had killed some people? It would be entirely Dominic's fault, due to the fact that he knew it was going to happen and yet he did nothing to protect the people without access to magic. And even when all is said and done, nobody thinks about things like that. Dominic got a night in jail not because of what I just described, but because of a pun. If he hadn't made that pun, he would have gotten away without even that one night. And that's terrible.

Central: Actually, if you watch, you'll see that some of us do offer praise at different points. I will usually praise virtually any appearance of Spark, and I'm quite fond of even the worst puns, for instance.

Most of us have something we like, and will comment on that. The big problem is that Mookie has a handful of issues that, for whatever reason, never seem to get addressed. 2-3 years ago, they were usually minor annoyances, like a grain of sand caught in your swimsuit.

Now imagine having that grain of sand stuck there for 2-3 years, and you'll see where some of the animosity comes from. If the current strip hits on a particular person's pet peeve, that person becomes a lot more likely to make a negative comment.

That said, there are a handful of folks who, for some reason, seem to think Mookie is the antithesis of all that should be done in webcomicry. These folks, I don't get, and generally just ignore them. If anything, they actually make it more likely that Mookie will simply discount all criticism, valid and otherwise, simply because it seems like he couldn't win, anyway.

They expect a 'fansite' to be full of praise?

Honestly, where's the hate?

I haven't seen any venom attached to the comic. Some criticisms here and there, and a lot of sarcasm. o_O?

Because the only valid form of fan commentary is blind praise

To be completely honest, Central, the mere fact that I bother to critique and criticize Mookie's work is evidence that I am a DD fan. If I didn't like it, I wouldn't bother to critique his work or to tell him what I think he's done badly - I simply would stop reading his comic and stop attending his forums.

Well, I didn't expect blind praise, and you don't have to be so venomous about it. I just didn't expect people to be SO critical. I mean, I expected some, but I see more than I expected.

And to Java/Schtolty:
How can Dominic miscalculate something if he KNOWS the outcome? If you KNOW what you need to do, and you KNOW what will happen when you do it, where's the risk? If its an absolute A+B=C, then, no risk. Of course, he probably is a bit too sure of himself.

Because people with second-sight-shields don't exist.

Because Dominic never actually misinterpreted things that lead to the deaths of certain blue-skinned people.

Because The Grey isn't actually beyond the scope of seers to predict the outcome.

Sorry, but second sight =/= omniscience.

Misinterpretation of divinations is half the fun of reading stories about seers.

I'd say closer to 82% of the fun.

A good 2% at LEAST is justified rape.

10% is strip slays

The rest is "misc"

Slays are only 10%? That's less than taxes!
