| Meh. It didn't engage me like other Zelda games did. Maybe I'm just shallow and couldn't get past the radical new graphic style. _________________ "For every action, there is an equal and opposite government program." ~ Unknown CC H.M. (#31) CC Winner (#40) CC Winner (#42) |

dude, if that were true they wouldn't be able to move their head. Their spinal cord would be fused. |
...what're you basing this off of? |
From time to time History channel does these shows where they actually try to explain mythological beings/creatures. They're fun shows.
This idea was covered.
But beyond that, just look at the positioning of the fins! Look at the positioning of the eyes! For the ear fins to be successful, they need to be flat, not radial, and they need to make it easier for the mer people to see where they're going.
These guys would have to be looking straight down for the position of the fins to do any damn good. Where they are at right now, makes the fins vertical and would slow the water speed of the head. Imagine riding a bike and using your front breaks to break. Your back end is going faster than your front end.
Biologically, it's not a good position and every time I see head/ear fins on mer people it drives me nuts
Course I feel the same way about mer people having hair as well. There's a reason why professional swimmers taper their ears close to their head and shave their hair off. _________________

| You're right, Ark. Just because I saw something on T.V. doesn't make me right.
However, just because a t.v. show doesn't make me right, doesn't mean my concerns are unfounded.
Hydrodynamics
Lots of good lists on that website which pretty much support my opinion that head fins and hair on merpeople are ridiculous and without purpose.
It will always bother me, and I will always cringe when I see it.
Just like the idea that modern interpretations of werewolves miraculously always gain 2 feet worth of mass bothers me, and I will always hate it. _________________

hey man, I'm not saying you don't have to like it, but regardless, it irritates the hell out of me.
As far as hair goes, the only logical use I can see for hair is if it's more or less translucent and fiber optic like Polar Bear fur, for the purpose of intensifying the sun's light so the body can produce Vitamin D ^_^ but even then the hair would have tobe very light and oily, clinging to the body. _________________

| *breaks out his 95% in Fluid Dynamics (water/air physics), being an Aerospace techie, and then will leave it be.*
Okay. Basically the fins on the head act in a manner similar to the rudder on a ship or plane. The movement of water past the fins serves to dampen lateral movement (i.e. from side-to-side)
Also, they could serve as a sensory organ (besides being ears :P) which helps them detect orientation in water. (A similar device is used on aircraft to determine the pitch (angle about the Z-axis)
As these things do not exist, we cannot say for any amount of certainty who is right, but honestly? I've taken Fluid Dynamics, so I think my theory is better-based in science. _________________ "For every action, there is an equal and opposite government program." ~ Unknown CC H.M. | To me it does, Ark. It's not like I'm saying you have to agree with me. It's like you are forbidding me from having an opinion on what I like and what I don't like. ps: Ark, I never attacked anyone telling them to agree with me about my opinion on the mer people.

Ok I understand where you're coming from for that, but that's why I say the fins would need to be behind the pivot point. The neck is the weakest area on the human body and to me it still seems incredibly illogical for the fins to be there. If you had a plane with a cockpit that swivels up down left right, with a low torque rating and weaker subsctructure than the rest of the machine, would you stick two rudders onto either side?
Now as a sensory organ -- yeah ok I can see that argument, but it seems a bit more logical to increase the size of the frontal lobe or occipital lobe or stick a balloon frog like organ under the chin, thus reducing hydrodynamic resistance. _________________

| Yeah, wow, people are looking WAY too much into filler. Cool off, peoples.
Pointed ears serve no purpose either over round ears. Neither do f*cking attached earlobes vs. detached. Chill. Out.
I'm all for them being a neutral race who want to be left alone.
I bet the dwarves live in an Arx Fatalis-like territory deep underground, and no one has even discovered them yet.
Though in a world full of magic, that's highly unlikely.
...!
Maybe all dwarves are resistent!
Hmmm.... |
