| Book: ElvenBane Author: Mercedes Lackey and Andre Norton. Genre: SciFi Fantasy. Favorite Line: "I will live, I will return...I will find a way to make her suffer." Recomendation: As a fan of Mercedes Lackey, I was a bit timid about reading one that was mixed with another author, but it has been freakin' awesome! And, it includes the destruction of the Elves, which is always a plus in my book. Dark humor, though, definately not lighthearted. PLENTY of sexual overtones and violence. Which is sheer awesome.
I can't remember...I think it was Song in the Silence, I think? Something about dragons, referred to as Kantri. It's a trilogy, or supposed to be. Read the first two, never got to the last. It was pretty freakin' awesome too.
I also recommend World War Z by Max Brooks for anyone who's a fan of zombies. His style's interesting, it's set up much like a newspaper interview. But it's freakin' awesome! I've read it about ...15 times?
Btw, Gray, I read Shade's Children as well. It was freakin' awesome.
Next book? whatever I happen to find at the Library, though I'm probably going to hunt for some Andre Norton since I've read all of Mercedes Lackey, excluding those with co-authors.
I might reread the Lirael series. Depends on my mood. _________________ So that when the silt covers us, We will hear the symphonies of vibrating earthworms, Singing us into an after-life of vagabonding. I like to be short, bittersweet, and to the point. |

| ok hitchikers and Enders are on hold
Book: Interworld Author: Neil Gaiman and Micheal Reaves. Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy/AWESOME Best line in the book: "This is a work of fiction. But given an infinite number of possible universes it must be true in one of them. And given it must be true in one of them it follows it must be true in all of them. So maybe its not as fictional as we thought." the intro before the book. hehehehehe
Would i recomend this book: YES! YES! a thousand times yes. just re-bought it in paperback so i don't wear out my nice hardback edition. Its about a boy named Joey Harker. Or maybe its about a lot of boys and girls almost named Joey Harker. Or maybe its about the fate of all possible existences struggling between forces of Magic and forces of Science. Target audience is probably teen to young adult but anyone who's a Gaiman fan will love this book. The pacing is crisp and every chapter leaves you on the edge of your seat. I swear one chapter in the book has me in tears (yes good writing has that effect on me....I cry at sad movies too, I'm such a wuss.) every time i read it. The only thing i didn't like about the book was that it ended. God i hope he continues it as a series of some sort. _________________ Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. | Just finished this one...
Book: City of Bones Author: Cassandra Clare Genre: Fantasy Favorite Line: -points to signature-
Recomendation: If you don't like series-es don't pick it up. It was a cliffhanger. Though, the second book, City of Ashes is out now. I've overspent my buget, so I haven't been able to grab it and let you know anything. All in all, it was a creative and thought-invoking plot line. As an aspiring author, I can generally guess the outcome of the book way in advance. One of my gift/curses. With this one, I wasn't able to guess until the chapter before the plot was revealed. Which, in my opinion, was awesome. The character development was enjoyable as well. I definately give this book a thumbs up, but I warn people that get too attatched to the characters... ...just be warned. _________________ "...When major badasses greet each other in movies, they don't say anything, they just nod. I'm put off just by the history on that one. It's plagiarized or at best highly derivative, if you're interested. The author is well-known for it, and derives her work from just about everywhere. Off other work, and her own fanfic (which was plagiarized itself [!]. Huge fandom wank to do with her).
And the book is based on a Harry Potter fanfic, so it's really not my cup of tea. And plus, her actions just leave a bad taste in my mouth.
Mortal Instruments (Fanfic and Book): http://www.fanhistory.com/index.php/Mortal_Instruments (Note the copy pasta from her own fanfic.)
Timeline: http://www.fanhistory.com/index.php?title=Cassandra_Claire/2006
General Cassandra Fandom Stuff: http://www.fanhistory.com/index.php/Cassandra_Claire#Introduction
The wikipedia article on CoB's used to have a full list of CoB's similarities to other works, but it's no longer up.
And I guess the whole point of this is, if your ever trying to get a book published: the Internet never forgets. *cue music* |

| Hmmm... I still like the book. -shrug- I could get into a debate with you about how this is or is not plagerism, but I have a headache.
And, personally, even if it is plagerism, I much prefer Cassandra Clare's version better. And I'm a Harry Potter fan. _________________ "...When major badasses greet each other in movies, they don't say anything, they just nod. | You're right, it can be a good book despite all of that. And the plagerism debate isn't worth it, because lets face it, the plagerism/derivative/homage line is so blurred that even if we argued for years and years we'd never get anywhere.
(It's just the fact that making a book from a fanfic seems so... crass.)
I'll borrow it from the library anyway, and read it. At best, I'll enjoy it (gasp) and at worst at least I'll be able to discuss it properly once I've read it. |

I finished City of Bones today. Now, while I'm pretty much on the fence about a lot of things, the way the plot is presented does make it very readable.
Although, with your post Tanasha I thought the cliff hanger was gonna be massive, like: (Warning, serious spoilers for the ending)
| Spoiler: | | | everyone about to be eaten by Valentine (oh, you know it's gonna happen), or everyone still dying (the fact that Clary ignored/forgetting to tell Isabelle that help wasn't coming for Alec in order for her to chase after Hodge was really... gah. And considering there was no way for her to know Magnus would rock up too. But hey. People panic), or Jace and Clary still not having worked out their Luke/Leia issues, ect |
but it actually wasn't that bad. There were unresolved issues, but nothing like some of the series books floating around. |

Hello! Hello! Hello!
My book for the day is Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. I think this will be the sixth time I've read it. It's one of my favorites. Time to kick back and relax... |

| Book: Red Seas Under Red Skies Author: Scott Lynch Genre: Fantasy Favourite Line: Locke ran his fingers under his coat lapel, then peeked at his cards and said, "Ahhhh-ha," with a tone of interested pleasure. They were an astonishing constellation of crap; his worst hand yet. "Maxilian, darling." Locke raised one eyebrow and smiled. "I knew you were driven, but I had no idea you could smoulder. Come, take me now! Jean won't mind; he'll avert his eyes like a gentleman."
Recommendation: Second book of the Gentlemen Bastards Sequence. Epic dialogue and godly descriptions. You should read The Lies of Locke Lamora first though. _________________

| -blinks away blurriness- I'ma hunt down whoever smacked me with the Hardcore Cold Bat and shove it up their hind end.
@ Jack: Yeah, definately not worth the arguement. And the warning was more for people like my friend Erica who read the book before me and still rants and raves about how much she hated the ending. When I borrowed the book from her, I was surprised that there weren't any bite marks. Then again, eating books was always more my thing than hers.
| Spoiler: | | | |
Now, the book I did that to is called Touch the Dark, part of a series that I really enjoy. It was an accident that it got Omnomnomed. That copy was previously Erica's... she tried to get it back from me, so I put it in my mouth. I have canine tendencies when people try rip things from my jaws, so... I ended up having to buy her a new copy. >>; Ironically enough, I had the urge to eat the book's predecessor, Claimed by Shadow, because of its MASSIVE cliffhanger. ...I didn't, though... because I was in the break room at work and people would have looked at me funny.
@ Dhizzy: Moon Called by Patricia Briggs. Totally one of my most favoritest books ever! Because it is just that epically awesome. _________________ "...When major badasses greet each other in movies, they don't say anything, they just nod.
