Point with the joker is that he wasn't "dark", but his violent tendencies is what made you think twice. This joker isn't even remotely close. They might as well just call it Batman Meets Jack the Ripper.

Objection
I know I said I wouldn't argue with you, Kev, but this new evidence contradicts your statement.

Topping, or even matching, Jack Nicholson at anything is no easy task. That's why, when Nolan and crew began developing Batman's arch-nemesis for the big screen, they needed to work a new (albeit terrifying) angle different from Nicholson's take on the character in 1989's "Batman".
"What's strong about [the Joker] was this idea of anarchy, this commitment to chaos," Nolan explains on a warm, sunny afternoon while taking a break from filming "Dark Knight" scenes on set in downtown Chicago. "He's not just a bank robber or an ordinary criminal who's out for any kind of material gain. I talked to Heath a lot about that even as we were finishing the script, and we both agreed that's the most threatening force, in a way, that society faces--that of pure anarchy by someone who really wants to do harm for its sake and for his own entertainment."
That idea of anarchy stems from the Joker's first appearance over 60 years ago in Batman #1. Nolan's younger brother and "Dark Knight" screenwriter, Jonah, came up with the idea of tapping that issue's take on the character to build a practical big-screen baddie. Dozens of murders littered the Joker's first few comic appearances and it was his reactions to the crimes that made him scary.

What really ticks me off about the new Batman movie is that they're bringing Katie Holmes' character back, minus the Katie Holmes. I mean, if you bring a character back from the first movie, but the actor/actress doesn't want to return for the part, don't bring the character back.
Unless the character is essential to the plotline, I can understand that, but with the case of a Batman movie, just get a new girl.

Didn't Katie Holmes win a Razzie for her "wonderful" performance? Maybe that was the deciding factor...

Her replacement is Maggie Gyllenhaal. How is that any better?

Katie Holmes said herself that she didn't want to come back, so I doubt the Razzie a lot to do with it.
I don't even know if she was nominated for a Razzie.

In my brain at least, they look vaguely similar. But even so, the different actor, same character thing just ruins it. It's more distracting then those moles on the face of the guy who played Batman in Batman Begins. (I know it's superficial, but I couldn't stop staring at them throughout the movie. >_<)

At the very least, they could have revealed that she's actually a Time Lord.

But that would incite a paradox that would destroy your brain. Doctor Who and Batman do not mix.

What the hell's a Razzie? Never heard of it.

And this is probably weird coming from a straight guy, but I don't go to Batman movies to watch the girls. I'll probably barely notice she's there.

No, there's nothing weird about that. Just about the only female in Batman that is there for sex appeal would be Catwoman. In the movies, the "love interest" characters almost seem tacked-on. In the TV show, and for the most part in the comics, they tend to dispense with this formality altogether. After all, as they mention in Batman Begins, Batman is a symbol, and it's really hard to get with the ladies when you're a symbol.

True, but the movies have always had more of a focus on Bruce Wayne than the comics did. In the comics, Wayne was provided as proof that Batman had an alter-ego and, theoretically, a life outside crime-fighting, but that was pretty much it; 90% of each comic was Batman, Batman, Batman.

When they made the movies, they shifted it closer to 50/50, bringing in more Bruce (and apparently as a result more interaction with the token love interest for each movie) and resulting in less Batman time.

EDIT: Or has this been stated already? That sort of felt rehashed.

And then at the same time, the extended Bruce Wayne time and love interest really only serve to bring into sharp focus how he can't have personal relationships anymore, not while he's the goddam Batman.

The TV animated series had him as Bruce Wayne a fair amount (at least 20-30%), although again, that was often as counterpoint to his being Batman, and usually there more to further the plot than show him as a regular guy.

Jack Nicholson IS THE KILLING JOKE.

I don't think Heath has it in him.

JN's joker was God.

I still remember how comepletely awesome he was in that movie and I havn't seen it in 8-9 years.

Ren, I am very tempted to kill you now. I grew up watching the animated series so Mark Hamill's version of Joker was the only Joker I was ever truly satisfied with. Even the old 60's TV Joker was better than Jack's! At least that guy remained true to the comics at that time; y'know, when the comics were made to be all "sunny" and "colorful".

What moles? I never saw any moles. I was focusing on watching the Batman kick ass to notice any moles.

You didn't notice? Dude, the guy had like three star-nosed moles strapped to his face the whole time. And I think he had a vole hanging off his chin.

Dude's got some serious acting chops.
