| I went to see the golden compass, and have come to the conclusion that the people who whine and moan about the movie fit into one of two categories:
1. People who are so religious the concept of demons not being evil turns them into born again evangelists.
2. People who fall alseep half-way through the movie, and don't actually pay attention to the plot.
There's absolutely nothing clunky or lacking in the plot, everything is explained in the movie.
The concept of demons is pre 3rd council of Nicea, whereupon it was decided by the Roman Catholic Church that all demons are in hell. The concept of Demon is something that many die hard ultra religious christians cannot handle - non-mortal spirits on earth. Anyone who watches Inuyasha, knows anything about Hinduism, or anyone who has even read the old testament (King Solomon and his Ring of Demons), will understand what I'm talking about here.
The plot isn't completed. Anyone who says "The movie sucks because it's not finished" needs a proper kick in the ass, because they're about 100x as stupid as the people who said "The Fellowship of the Ring sucked because it felt unfinished."
"Yeah, no shit, sherlock!" This first movie is part of a trilogy, of course it won't be finished or complete.
This movie was far better than the best Harry Potter, in that:
1. The kids are actually smart! 2. The kids aren't required to be "The Ones" to defeat "the bad guy". 3. It isn't formulaic british writing. I hate british formula writing, it lacks imagination.
Ebert has a good review about the issues some people seem to have with this movie: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071206/REVIEWS/712060302 _________________

| | I read the book instead of seeing the movie. The book was called "Northern lights". Pretty awesome book. |

| It was pretty cool. My friend told me that the didn't finish the first book, though. BTW, it's daemons, not demons. _________________ "Crazy? No, I'm sane. God am I sane."

| Sorry for the double post, but I felt it was necessary to type this regarding the movie. I skimmed through the book and found out that they changed the sequence of events towards the end. In the movie, Iorek faced off against Iofur before Lyra freed the kids from the lab. However, in the book, these events are reversed. After the team boards the airship and sail off into the sunset, the airship crashes in Svalbard, where the Ice Bears live. Iofur takes Lyra and Roger prisoner(I assume, I only skimmed through the book), and Iorek battles him. Iorek stays behind cause he's the new Ice Bear king, and everything after that, I'm not sure about. Sorry if I spoiled anything for anyone. _________________ "Crazy? No, I'm sane. God am I sane."

| Hmmm... I seem to remember hearing that the movie maker (or was it the author of the original?) expressely stated that he was against Christianity (or perhaps it was Catholicism...), and wrote/made it to try to hurt it. _________________

| put it in spoiler tags pls :D
But, if you see the movie, you come to understand why the sequence of events were changed. Much like why they changed what appears when in the lord of the rings movies (remember they changed around things to fit the timeline?).
In either case it is very enjoyable :D And despite some of the changes, I think it's a decent adaptation geared towards kids and the young at heart! :D
Maulkin, it's mainly directed at the vatican. But in either case, much of this "he's anti christian and wants to destroy the faith" is ultra religious/right wing propaganda. _________________

| There was some religious stuff in there, though I don't know if it was anti-religion or pro-religion. And I'm not sure how changing the sequence of events was beneficial. _________________ "Crazy? No, I'm sane. God am I sane."

| I haven't read the books for quite a while. Like what? Quite a few years, actually. I remember staying up till the ungodly hours of the morning finishing the last book. Good days.
I have yet to see the movie, but I'm not really sure that I want to. I tend to find that with books I've read, I'm generally fairly disappointed with the movies. I think it's because I'm being faced with an actual actor playing the character and giving me a visual of their appearance rather than just letting my imagination create one. *shrugs*
My mum will probably make me go watch it though. *shrugs* |

| You will enjoy it sunny :D just remember the movie is toned down for the PG-13 rating. No blood what so ever. Quite a bit of violence though.
I think that the movie was aimed at freedom of exrepssion/religion. From what I hear the books also had that message, but went deeper into the theological and philosophical aspects of that concept. _________________

| *laughs* Oh joy XD I remember in the... I think it was the 2nd book or something... *shrugs* can't remember. But whatever book it was in, there was this scene that I freaked out over. >< And I just checked the publishing date of my version, and it was 2002. So I would have been like... 10. Ahh... back in the day.
Maybe I will go see it then. Will get me out of the house, if anything. <33 |

| Just think of it like this:
The movie won't ever replace the book, but it is a real fun ride :D _________________

| You'll have to read the book <3
... or you could just read spoilers on the net... I guess.
And I assume that if they make the next books into movies, they'll have to put the scene in. Unless they change it... hrmm. |
