OK, as probably most of you will know by now little old me is not an american citizen. Neither do I stem from Canada, Great Britain or any other place included in the list of english-speaking states. I come from a little place called Germany. Thus my mother tongue is not english, it is german. I, in contradiction to a sadly big number of my fellow germans, think that out language is a good and a great one. So in this thread I want to teach you all a little about my mother tongue. I claim nothing that I write here to be 100% correct, but I try my best. Hope you enjoy and learn something while you're at it.

Chapter 1 - Insults and Curses

When learning a new language I think the most interesting and most important thing is to first make yourself familiar with the ways said language has to express distaste for situations and people. After all, it's like Karate: If you know how to fight you know how not to, and if you know all the insults you know how to avoid them. I will give you the most vital ones, along with a short explaination concerning their meaning and a suitable translation to english, where applicable.

Beleidigungen - Insults

Arschloch - Pretty much an allrounder in the insult section and probably the second most socially acceptable insult in the german language. Can be translated straight to "Asshole".

Schwein - Used mostly when you want to point out someone is either extremely unhygienic in any sense or seriously morally corrupt. Can be translaed to "pig" with many variations such as Dreckschwein ("dirty pig") or Bullenschwein (an insult tailored solely against cops).

Hurensohn - This insult does not only encompass the person it is targeted against ( always males) but also their mothers. For some germans it is the most grave insult you can give. Translatable to "son of a bitch".

Hure - Only targeted against females most of the time this questions the sexual morals and ethics of said female. Possible variants are Schlampe and Nutte, all three translatable with "bitch" or "whore".

Wichser - Also a rather widely used insult the wordly sense of this acuses the target of frequent practice of masturbation. Can be translated with the british term "wanker"

Flüche - Curses

Scheisse - probably THE most widespread curse-word in the german language it is mostly accepted by society in general and ca be translated with "shit". Those who prefer mild versions of insults say Mist instead.

Verdammt - Mostly used to give a negative connotation to other words it can also function as a curse on its own. A suitable translation would be "damn".

Dreck - The most harmless curseword the german language has to offer. English translation would be "dirt".

This list has no claims to completeness and will probably see editing and fill-ins in the future, but this is a nice base-knowledge of Insults & Curses.

German is cool! Yay, bad words ^_^

You have no really strong language in german do you? Very interesting.

My Girlfriend, briefly a student of the Japanese language, told me that most Japanese "bad words" come from being impolite in varrying degrees. i.e, calling somebody by their first name without getting their permission. (something like that)

Anyway, back to german! Teach us grammar! =D

Pronounciation is a subject I'm not too familiar with. That is not too say I can't pronounce those words, I just don't really know how to express pronounciation in scripture.

I like where this is going.

I'm interested in learning German [since I want to go to Wacken at some point] and this is relevant to my interests.

I shall be watching for updates, and reading them carefully.

Keep up the good work, Super!

I'll take a whack at this. My friend's taking German, and she taught me a little bit. I apologize if I mangle it.

Schwein - Svin-uh

Wichser - Veekser

Flüche - ü's hard, kinda like saying eee when you're about to say ooo. Fleek-uh?

Scheisse - shy - suh

Verdammt - I think this one's said as it's spelled.

Dreck - I think this one's said as it's spelled.

Let's save the pronounciation for some later time. I gotta think of a way to teach you how to pronounce Ä.Ö and Ü, also called the Umlaute. Let's just keep to the scripture for the moment.

What are you talking about? Monocle is pure class. =D

Now teach me more german! Teach me all the needlessly big words, so I can sound intelligent in your language.

OK, moving on to...

CHAPTER 2 - Main word categories

There are multiple categories which are used to differentiate words from one another in the german language, all in all about 9 or 10 of them, depending on which set of teaching you apply. In this particular article however I'm only going to explain the three main categories to you, known as the Substantive, the Verben and the Adjektive. I will tell you about general use of words sorted in those categories.

First are the Substantive, also known as Hauptwort, Namenwort, or their latin name Nomen. Substantive are words that name people, things, places, situations, etc. Examples would be names for people, like Eric or Carla, or names for things, like car or ball, and everything similar.

Next are the Verben, also known as Zeitwort or Tätigkeitswort. These words are used to describe somebodies or somethings actions, for example drive, tame or read.

The third major category are the Adjektive, which are also called Wiewort or Eigenschaftswort. They describe qualities and properties of something or somebody, like colors or dimensions. Examples would be red, tall, squishy, etc.
