| Final Fantasy 12 just spilled all over my screen. I would focus less on people and more on the sky alone. It's a wonderous thing even without additional treasure and steampunk fiction thrown in. _________________

The main vocation for English majors.
I, personally, would write a story about the sky itself and its dual indifference and beauty in the world it surrounds. But that's just me. Non-Final Fantasy Sky Pirates FTW >.> _________________ Most piratical fox you're likely to see.

| Made me think of Laputa: Castle in the Sky. (Oh how I love that movie <3)
But yeah. I agree with what the other people who have posted have said. Focus more on the sky rather than something else.
Though out of curiousity, how long does the story have to be? _________________

| I'd write about a ship of men, sailing upon the sea of clouds, docking on the highest mountain ports, ever searching for the elusive sky whales and their precious cloud blubber. _________________

| Yeah, I've got a million of them. Disjointed tales of adventure and mystery, where not all is as it seems, and the most mundane contain miracles beyond number. _________________

Do you have a word limit? And what type of time frame do you have to write the story?
If you have a reasonably small word limit (up to 1500 words is pretty tiny for me, but I am not overly talented at the are of the short-story) I'd suggest sticking to one concept or idea. It's better to develop a single idea into a quality piece of work instead of putting in lots of ideas which are good, but there simply isn't enough space to expand them. And I wouldn't worry about the castles in the sky "being done", as I'm sure your take on the concept will end up being quite different to those castle in the sky stories that already exist.
Also, here are a few more things you might like to consider before getting started:
1. How does your world work? Are the protagonists of your story familiar with the world at large, or are they rather sheltered as to it's workings?
2. Who are your main characters? Who is telling the story?
3. What is the plot of the story? How to the sky pirates fit in?
4. How do the sky pirates fit into the world itself? Are they perhaps scorned and hated by the people for their thieving ways, or admired for the freedom of their lifestyle in a world where most people are limited to their single floating island?
It sounds like you've already got the story going and the gem makes a good plot point (or MacGuffin), and I'd say if you have the idea, you're already on your way to create a good story. Good luck with your assignment. :)
...Oh, and I'm not an English Major yet, but I will be next year. Can I join the special club then? :D |
