Just because you aren't an english major doesn't mean you can right on par or better than someone who is.

Ark, you should be ashamed of yourself, selling out your writing skills like that. That behavior is not befitting of an english major! For shame.

Yeah, I'm just bitter because -I- wanted to say that. :P

I'd help out a bit, but I should probably get back to studying for this final that is hanging over my head like a doom-filled evil giant scary-faced dagger....of doom.

I have to disagree with you on that one. People who THINK they can write, right off the bat are the worst kind. I admit I was one of them and boy did I get a wake up call. I hold myself to really high standards, so you better believe I hold everyone else up to said standards too. It isn't pretty. At lease English Majors get some training, doesn't mean all can write but at least they get drilled in mechanics.

You can gain training in the written form, but the spark of creativity and the flair for the subject many people lack even with the fancy piece of paper.

Having said that I do plan to follow it in tertiary studies.

I agree, and ditto. Learning English in the school systems can assist you in technical and analytical aspects, but for things such as flair, creativity and quality of ideas, well, that's something you just have to have or develop yourself.

I yet again, disagree. Sure raw materials are wonderful, for they have potential BUT just as you can't use raw elements to say fuel a car until they are refined into proper fuel, one can't simply write with raw, untrained ideas. If this were true any creative person would be a world famous writer, and yet only scant few are.

I should note that I'm included in this xD. I'm still working on becoming a decent writer.

I personally have been realizing that there's a lot to drawing that I didn't know about. I agree with LB, it takes a lot of time and effort to learn to write interesting stories to create detailed drawings.

The written word is an artform, not a science. There is only so much that can be taught and the rest must be learned on one's own. While it is good to learn techniques, they are by no means the element that is going to make the writing worth reading.

There is no set way to write, no rules that make it brilliant. It either is, or it isn't. The techniques one learns can only enhance something if it can stand up on it's own already.

And now I'm making srs bsns on teh interwebz, and that is a no-no.

A formal education can most certainly do wonders for the mechanical aspects of storytelling and writing as a whole. Additionally, attending post-secondary with a concentration in creative writing can be a great boon to story design and the like.

However, I do agree with Phoenix that talent and creativity are two things which cannot be formally taught. One must develop the latter on their own, and without either the former or the work ethic of an ant, then a career involving creative writing may not be the best choice.

That doesn't mean the person has to go through formal education to be a good writer. Most of my favourite writer's never went to university, as did many of the successful people in the world. Going through university is not compulsory to be a skilled writer. It comes down to the issue of being talented or becoming talented. Both ways depend on the individual, and who they are, not whether or not they attended formal schooling.
