"O-Of course!" stammered Sara, still a little rattled.

"Of course!? But I paid for this room! I expect to sleep in here!!" Bastian yelled. "I'm not sleeping in the same room with an undead mongoloid!!"
Sara grabbed Bastian and escorted him out.
"Why don't you go take a walk, Bastian? Maybe that'll calm you down."
Bastian muttered angrily.
"Fine! But if this is how I'm treated for doing something nice, then I might as well not do a good deed ever again!"
Bastian stormed out of the inn, muttering curses under his breath the whole way.

Sara turned back to Blackhart. "I-I'm sorry about that. He's just a little...rough around the edges. He means well, he really does. It's just that...." Sara hesitated for bit. "Well, he never had a family. So, he doesn't quite understand some things about a parent caring for their child. I guess seeing you risk your life for your daughter, well, it must have made him upset."

Blackhart stood and looked over at the woman.

"He has the right to hate me, to despise me." He said, "Besides that, my relationship with my daughter is...strained..."

Ardent slumped against a wall and lowered his head before speaking, again.

"The first time I saw her after my death, I was happy for the first time in years. The joy of knowing she was alive completely changed my perspective on life, or in this case lack-there-of." He explained, "However, my exploits during that time led her to hate me. She lives to destroy me, as she has the notion in her mind that I am a mindless monstrosity hellbent on destruction."

Ardent's gaze moved to his daughter and then back to the woman.

"Bastian need not worry about me any longer. My outlook has changed, again. The time I was fleeing from her made me cold, but I must change if I am to ever regain her love..."

"That... must have been the paladin." He said, snapping back into reality.

When he was able to regain his bearings, he realized he was standing in the middle of the plaza, a dumb founded look across his face. "That... that magic. It must be a spell that a paladin would be trained for. It would make the most sense." He dropped his head, "I've only heard rumors of it, the ones I've heard talk about a person completely losing themselves to the spell, their soul being sacrificed for the greater good."

He spun around, his thoughts racing, "I hope she is ok. But this doesn't help me any. I didn't gain any motives as to why she was here." He paused, looking up, "However, I did get directions from that odd looking twig man. Are they reliable?"

"No..."

Rhu's head snapped around, looking for the source of the sound, "What!?"

"I happen to know that he has lied to you."

"So... he pointed in the wrong direction?"

"He was trying to have you killed. The way he pointed leads to an orc camp... one that doesn't take too kindly to visitors."

"How can I trust you? I can't even see you..." He determined that whoever was talking to him was in the dark alley beside him.

"I guess you can't... I will be taking my directions then and leaving..."

"Wait! I've seen the paladin!"

There was a long pause, long enough the Rhu dropped his head head, taking a few steps away, "You have?"

Snapping his head back in surprise, he quickly turned back towards the dark alley, "Yes! I've seen her. She casted some sort of spell..."

"You are a mage, are you not?"

"...Yes..." Rhu answered hesitantly.

"What kind of spell was it?"

"It... it was a draining spell. She released whatever she could into pure white magical energy, healing anyone within range."

"So... are you saying that she is currently incapacitated?"

"I'm... I'm not sure of a paladin's training, but I DO know the spell is very harsh to the body. There's a very good chance she's down right now. There's even a slight chance that she may be dead and gone, her soul completely spent."

There was a pause, then a folded piece of paper fell by Rhu's feet. "Here is what you requested. I thank you for your time and hard work. You have served me well."

"Served you... well?" But the figure was gone, and Rhu would never find out what he truly meant by that.

Bowing his head to the paper by his feet, he reached down to pick it up, unfold it, and inspect it. It was a map of the surrounding area, a red line drawn out between two x's. He blinked, then dropped his arms, "This doesn't help me! I can't read maps!!" He sighed, then looked around, realizing that he was very tired. "Maybe... maybe a nap would be good for me. I've certainly had an eventful day..."

He asked where he could find the inn, purchased a room with the last of his savings, and went up to try and sleep off the excitement of the day.

Sara stood silently, amazed by Blackhart's love for his daughter.
"Oh! I'm sorry, but I don't think we were ever properly introduced. I only know about you from what Bastian has told me, but I don't think you know anything about me."
Sara extended her hand.
"My name is Sara, Sara Delfino."

Blackhart looked at her with a certain ammount of amazement. It was rare that someone would willingly converse with him having the knowledge of his undead status, little alone when they knew he'd tried to kill one of their friends.

He accepted the introduction, though, as he walked over to her. He knelt before her and kissed her hand.

"Tis good to meet you, ma'dam." He said, standing back up, "I am Ardent Blackhart, former Knight of the Holy Order. If there is anything I can do for you-any questions I can answer, please say so."

Sara was taken aback.
Wow! So polite. Bastian could learn a thing or two from him.
"Well, I do have one question. Supposedly, there's a gang of thieves in this town, but everyone we've asked doesn't seem to know a thing about it. Do you happen to know anything about these thieves?"

"Alas, I do not. My interrogation of the only one who truly knows was cut short and I have no idea where he is, now." Ardent said, "However, if I had the proper scrolls, I could try to scry some information on them."

Blackhart wasn't particularly good with magic, but he had used scrying scrolls several times in the past. While he was incapable of using the spells without said scrolls, he was adept at using them.

"I, too, would like to bring these scoundrels to justice." Ardent continued, "I believe I was brought to this place for a reason. The combination of these theives and my daughter being here aids this belief."

Bastian walked down a dark and lonely street,
"Hmph, kick me out, will they? I'll show them."
Bastian kicked the dirt in frustration. A sad look appeared on his face.
"Even a twisted undead monster like Blackhart cares about his child, so why did my parents abandon me? Was I not good enough for them?"
Bastian pondered this question for a while, but stopped abruptly.
Someone's here.
Bastian turned around to see a mysterious silhouette standing before him.
A dark and foreboding voice echoed through the air.
"Are you....Bastian Lionhart?"
Bastian chuckled.
"So what if I am?!"
"Then...prepare to die!!!!"
The unknown assailant drew a spear of some kind, then charged at Bastian.

A shadowy humanoid figure made its way up one of the inn's wall, poking what appeared to be a head in the window. Drawing back its fist, it smashed through the glass...

---

...causing Rhu to shoot up from his sound sleep. "What the...? He rubbed his head, "What just happened? A... dream?" Rubbing his forehead, he dropped his head back on the pillow, "No... something more. Something I need to follow up on... I recognized that wall." He sighed softly, bringing his torso up and spinning his feet off the side of the bed, "Yes... that was the wall of the inn." He closed his eyes, trying to re-account what he had saw, "It was dark, but I sense a great good nearby that shadow."

His eyes shot open, "The Paladin! They wish to strike her down while she may be incapacitated! I... I must warn them!" He stood up, starting for the door, but suddenly stopped, "Too bad I have NO IDEA where to start looking!" He slapped his forehead, "Idiot! Think! Think! Where was the shadow?" He winced in thought, then threw his arm down, "Damn it! I can't remember!" Closing his eyes, he noticed the position of the moon. With that image, he ran to his window, "Good! It looks like I have sometime to get the word out. By my calculations... I would say I got about half an hour!" And in a yellow blur, he was out of his room and towards the front desk.

"Excuse me! Do you remember a women clad in silvery white armor come in here?"

"Uh..." The women behind the desk looked up, thinking the answer might be on the ceiling, "No... not that I recall. It wasn't recently I can tell ya that. I just got on duty."

"Damn it..." Rhu pounded on the desk, "It's important that I find her. You are sure you didn't see anyone... like a paladin of some sort."

"Honey... if I saw a paladin, it would have been ingrained in my memory, seeing as how we don't get many folks like that around here."

Rhu sighed, "Thank you anyway." He nodded slowly, walking out the front door and making his way to the back of the inn. "I guess I'll just have to wait for him out here." He sighed looking up at the moon, "It looks like it may be sometime." Taking a breath and sitting on the ground, he summoned his sketchbook, pulled out a pencil from under his robes and started to draw on one of the pages.

Bastian stood over the spear man, a large smile on his face.
"OW!" cried the spear guy. "You didn't need to be so rough!"
Bastian pulled the man up by his collar.
"Not so tough without your voice enchantment, huh?"
The man looked like he was about wet himself.
"Don't hurt me anymore please! I beg of ya!"
"Why did you attack me?"
"I was only supposed to distract ya! Keep you away from the inn!"
"WHY!!?" Bastian shouted at the man.
""Cuz w-w-w-we were s-supposed to attack the paladin! We didn't need you in the way!!!" The man was completely terrified now.
Bastian dropped the man on the ground and ran back to the inn.
Dammit, things just keep getting worse!

Sighing, Rhu looked up into the night sky, "If my vision was correct, than he should be here anytime now..." He closed his sketchbook, getting up from the ground, keeping his eyes peeled in the shadows that was the alley he was sitting in.

And, as if on cue, a shadowy figure started to approach. Rhu decided he wanted the element of surprise, so he ducked behind a crate, watching the figure approach the building. The shadow looked up, nodded, then lept on the wall, seeming to stick to it. Slowly, the figure crawled up towards the window.

"Excuse me..." Rhu stood under the figure, "May I ask what you are attempting to accomplish?"

"What the!?" The climber looked over his shoulder at the yellow robed figure, "Who are?" Suddenly, he began his descent towards the ground, losing grip of the building. "The hell!?"

"Gotta watch for those sudden icy patches. They'll catch ya everytime."

The man crashed down in a series of crates, creating quite a loud noise.

Bastian heard a loud crash as he rounded a corner. He saw a man in yellow standing by the inn, eyeing a pile of broken crates. Bastian grabbed the man by his collar and thrust his sword in front of his neck.
"You! What are you doing here!?"
Bastian looked up the inn wall. The window to their room was right above them. Bastian looked back down at the man.
"You better explain what you're doing here, or else my blade might slip and cut your throat."
---------------------------------------------------
Sara heard a loud noise outside. She leapt up and ran to the window. She poked her head out and saw Bastian threatening the yellow hooded figure who had helped her earlier.
"Bastian!!" she shouted.

"WHOA!" Rhu brought his hands up, "There... there was someone trying to climb up the wall, and I was stopping them! I swear to you! Look in the pile of boxes!"

Shifting his eyes, trying not to move the rest of his body, he was shocked when he discovered that who ever had fallen from the building had suddenly vanished. Focusing back to the one with the blade, "Please! You have to believe me! I went into the inn after meeting you guys to try and sleep off my travels, and while I was sleeping, I had a vision of someone trying to scale the wall and into one of the rooms. Not knowing where she was staying, and unable to get that information, I decided I would wait out here and stop him directly! Please! You have to believe me!"

Bastian looked at the man suspiciously. He wasn't sure whether the guy was a harmless peeping tom, or a dangerous assassin. Bastian could smell the fear on him, but he didn't seem to be lying. Bastian sheathed his sword.
"I know you. You were at the alleyway earlier. What were you doing there? What business do you have in this town?"

Sara let out a sigh of relief. Bastian had seemed to resolve this conflict peacefully. She felt a bizarre sensation sweep over herself when she thought about Bastian. She became suddenly embarassed.
Maybe I should just go to bed. I had too much excitement today.

"I... I actually have no business here. I'm lost!" Rhu chuckled weakly, "As I told you before, I was on my way to the academy to try and better control my second sight, but... I have an AWFUL sense of direction." He took a breath, "So... I somehow stumbled here in this little place. Trying to get some information about where I was or how to get to where I was trying to go, some strange... person called out to me from a dark alleyway, asking for my help. Apparently whoever was talking to me has his finger on the pulse of the going-ons around here and requested information about this Paladin in exchange for directions to Quiral. When I reported what had happened to her... he vanished, leaving only a map with instructions on how to get there." He pulled out the map, showing it the man who had threatened him earlier, "He told me you had... lied... to me."

Something clicked in his head, "Oh my God!" He slapped himself on the forehead, "How could I have been so stupid!? He wasn't trying to learn about why the Paladin was here, he wanted to know her movements so he knew when it would be best to strike!" He swung his fist down, "And I just gave him the perfect opprotunity! Damn it... damn it!"
