"And that's it for today's lesson," said Ezio Acerbi, closing the thick tome on his desk. "Remember, next class period will be your practical examination on a disguise illusion, so your only assignment until then is to make sure it's convincing. Dismissed."

The students stood and the chatter began as they left in small groups. Ezio smiled, wondering what they had in mind for their disguises. This class was an interesting bunch, so there were bound to be some good ones. He was glancing over a lesson plan when snatches of whispers drifted to his ear.

"...Two new professors in one term? That's weird." "At least we got the nice one..."

"...can't believe he just dumped me like that!"

"Where's my quill? I had it five minutes ago."

"...just awful about what happened to Miss Sunderliss..."

He looked up ever so slightly at this, not entirely surprised that rumors had already spread so fast. Cassafinn Sunderliss, one of the Academy's researchers, had just returned from Maltak's border in a less than pleased frame of mind. Everyone on the faculty knew the details; many agreed that she'd been right to try. The general consensus was that they should stay out of the orcs' affairs. Ezio, however, had another idea.

He stood and waited for the last students to leave the room. Locking the door carefully, he set out for the teachers' lounge. He had an idea to pitch.

Jeffery strolled down the halls of the Arcane Academy and took in the moment. A year ago he wasn't sure he'd make it here. Shoveling pig manure, fixing broken wagon wheels, and working part time for his uncle. It was all worth it to get the money together for admission.

The admission with the Dean seemed to go pretty well, his understanding of field theory helped him get in along with his eagerness to actually start. The vote of confidence his uncle had sent ahead of him didn't hurt either. She told him that he'd have to do a lot of catching up since the semester had already started. He assured her that he could do it.

Things went on between them like this for a little while. She seemed like she was a little distracted though. Jeffery hoped that she was alright, but he figured it wasn't his place to ask.

After talking with the Dean, Jeffery got his class list he went off to actually find them. He'd missed the first two for the day and it looked like he was going to miss the last one too. It was a class on illusion magic with Professor Acerbi. When he got there the door was locked and it looked like the professor was walking away.

If he were anybody else, Jeffrey would have ran to catch up to Acerbi and begged for the past assignments so he could get to work. But Jeffery didn't see the reason to bother the man when he obviously had something important to do. So Jeffery turned on his heel and strolled back to the dorm room he'd been assigned to. Tomorrow he'd have to rush and get some work done, but that was tomorrow. Tonight he'd settle in, get some sleep, and wake up ready to start his training.

Eliane whistled to herself as she walked through the snow. The weather was beautiful - chilly but not freezing, and a gentle breeze carried the flurry in little whirlwinds. She knew in the back of her mind that she should worry about her plants, but she'd prepared them well for winter.

Even if it did mean tests and homework, it was nice to be back at school, especially after the last field trip she'd gone on. She shuddered involuntarily at the thought, then continued on her way. She needed to fine tune her illusion.

A few hours later, Ezio strolled out of his with a smile on his face and several papers under his arm. His plan had been approved, and it was time to spread the word.

As he walked through the halls, a few papers drifted to the ground, each reading:

Save Maltak Society

A young man walked though the freshly fallen snow that had occured around him, stupid snow he thought to himself he clapped his hands together and touched a symbol on his left shoulder. pausing to look around for others, he placed his hands on the snow, a path appeared to him and he walked though towards the castle. he quickley made his way around to his classes,

~20 minutes later~

"Well that was a good lesson," he heard one of the students say,
"What?" he said "Your kidding right? that was one boring piece of claptrap i have ever heard, talk about simple symbology and it's processes." He shuddered to think how they would do if the professor had arranged a test for them tommorrow. He walked outside and the path that he had previously made had been covered up by new snow. He groaned and made a new passage though the nigh forgiving snow. he sat down underneath one of the many trees and had a light sleep. waiting for his next lesson to start.

One Week Ago

Nikara leaned back in her rocking chair, her home in Barthis still moderately furnished as she only recently moved in. Newspapers were scattered around the mostly bare wooden floor, with the most recent sitting there right next to her. She clutched the dark hilt of the ornate ceremonial dagger she owned in her left hand, her right scraping a sharpening stone along its edge to hone it back to razor sharp. The woman frowned at the sight of a bit of blood on the side of the blade, and quickly licked her finger to rub it off.

The red-haired amazon-ish statured woman quickly drew her attention away from the blade at the sound of three strong knocks at her door. She slid the dagger behind her and swiftly strode to open the door. Nobody was there...but a small note rested at her feet. She picked it up and read it over.

Go to Quiral. Trouble soon. Act preemptively.

The woman frowned slightly as she took the note back into her house, closing the door. She quickly inserted the corner into a candle and set it on a glass table, allowing it to burn away. "...to Quiral...so soon. This had better be important..."

Now

An empty stein rested in front of the woman at the bar in Quiral. Another, half-empty, was clutched tightly in her hand as she stared down into it. She spoke softly to herself. "...what the hell am I doing here?" As if to answer her question, the male bartender slid over towards her...his shift was just starting, and she was the only one to be found in this place at this early hour.

"...hey miss...I haven't seen you around before..."

"I'm from Barthis, visiting the Academy."

"Barthis eh? I've got some friends out that way."

"That's nice..."

He paused a moment, not quite sure how to react to that...so he quickly changed the subject. "...you hear about Professor Acerbi's mysterious little meeting for Maltak?"

She blinked, quickly looking up from her drink. "What was that?"

"Yeah, he's been passing these out for a while now..." He reached behind the bar, pulling out a flier and sliding it to her. She released her stein and clutched it in both hands as she read over the brief message.

"...is that so..."

"Yeah! Isn't it great that people are still trying to help, even after what happened to Miss Sunderliss?"

"...it's incredible, that's for sure..." She clenched the paper tightly, causing it to wrinkle up. "...where might I find this Mister Acerbi? I would like to lend my services, though I'm not a student..."

"That's real kind of you, Miss..."

"What can I say? I'm all for community service..."

Eliane sat on her bed and stared at the flier, debating whether or not to go. On the one hand, she knew what had happened the last time the Academy has tried to help Maltak. On the other hand, Prof. Acerbi was bound to give extra credit for this, and she was struggling with some of his class.

She finally decided and stood to get her coat. After all, she didn't have anything else planned for the evening.

The problem with traveling for weeks on end, Jeffery thought as he stared at his ceiling, is going completely stir-crazy when you have nowhere to go.

When he arrived at his room Jeffery unpacked his meager belongings and settled in. For hours Jeffery had tried to will his mind to sleep, but with no luck. He just had to do something, anything, to take his mind off of sleep so he actually could fall asleep.

Grabbing his worn, black coat, he headed out of his room and back outside. The snow was still falling gently through the air. It's lazy descent reminded him of his years at his uncle's place. They lived outside of town in the middle of a huge field. When the snow fell, the world seemed to stop in it's tracks and take a moment for itself.

As Jeffery wandered the snow covered paths of the Academy he came across one of the half buried fliers. Some slush had erased a lot of the writing, but he could tell it was a field trip notice and it was made by Prof. Acerbi. Without anything else to go on a plan started to form in Jeffery's head.

If he got all his past and some future assignments from his teachers, then the trip would give him some time to work on them and maybe earn some extra credit too. But he needed to know more. He saw another student, a black-haired girl, walking along another path. Jeffery jogged through the snow to catch up to her.

"Hey," Jeffery called out as he closed the distance between them, "Do you know anything about this field trip?"

Her boots left distinctive prints layered upon the many on the well-trodden, snow-covered path. She was hunched over, her left arm clamped over her right bicep both to numb a bit of the near-eternal pain there and to keep the massive half-sleeve in place through the breeze. Her eyes traced the path just in front of her on the ground, and she looked very distracted. She had had a bit TOO much to drink, and one of her numerous arm-wounds had opened up on her again. Her hand was clenched into a fist, the occasional drop of crimson staining the snow in her wake.

She would barely notice the two students, a black-haired girl and a blonde-haired boy, moving in the opposite direction. She winced in pain as she brushed past them with her right arm, stopping as she quickly jerked her head around to glare back at them...if they had noticed her, then probably her most striking feature would be the red orcish tattoo marking over her right eye, along with her impressive stature. She grit her teeth at the sight of them, snorting before quickly moving on without a word.

She would make haste once they were out of sight...thankfully, her wound would have closed up enough to stop up most of the bleeding by the time she reached her destination. According to the barkeep, the Professor should have been right here at this hour...so she raised her left hand and knocked at the door. "...Professor Acerbi?"

Eliane turned around at the sound of a voice. "Hmm?"

The boy repeated his question.

"Oh," she replied. "I don't think it's a field trip, just a meeting. I figured I don't have anything better to do." After a pause, she extended a hand. "I'm Eliane, by the way."

Ezio opened the door to his office. "Yes? Are you here for the meeting?"

The strange-looking woman smiled and nodded, once more clutching at her covered right arm with her left hand. "I don't know if I'll be able to make it to the meeting...but...I'd like to offer my help to the denizens of Maltak. If you couldn't tell, I've got a bit of stock with them." She pressed forward a little bit, standing over him and leaning her left side against the door jam. "I'm not a student...but...is there anything I can do to help?"

"Jeffery," he responded while he shook Elaine's hand, "I just became a student here today. I've got a lot of catching up to do for the semester. Its a pain walking from one side of Callan to the other when you can't make a bookmark yet."

Jeffery sheepishly smirked as he realized that he was probably boring her with his problems, "Anyway, I've got an illusion class with Acerbi and I was hoping he'd offer some extra. Have you ever been on one of these trips before? I'm probably going to sign up at the meeting and I was wondering what to expect."

Ah, the best part of illusion magic... Ozy thought to himself, while wandering the courtyard. Being able to skip class, and having no one be the wiser.

Ozy wandered aimlessly for a while, stopping on occasion to pack together some of the falling precipitation into the perfect snowball, and chuck it towards passersby.

"Of course, this would be much more fun were there more people about..." He said to no one in particular. As if on cue, he turned a corner and found himself face to face with a certain black haired girl he was familiar with, as well as a boy he couldn't say he knew...

Ozy grinned.

"Ah, well... If it isn't my favorite teachers pet. And you've brought a date, what fun. Ozymandias Q. Gwynplaine, at your service once again." He gestured towards the rapidly expanding field of flowers that seemed to be spreading across the once snowy courtyard. "All my prowess is at the disposal of those of you in young love." His grin only widened at the sight of Eliane's obvious discomfort, and her cohorts confusion.

Eliane rolled her eyes. "Jeffery, this is Ozy. Ozy, Jeffery's new. I'm showing him where the meeting is."

She gritted her teeth. I am not going to let him annoy me. It'd be better to be friends than enemies...

Ezio smiled at her. "Of course! I'm planning to take a group of students to the capital, and I'll need another chaperone. Would you be interested, Miss..."

"Nikara...Nikara Kalga Ereatha...I just moved into Barthis, and I was visiting out this way when I saw one of your fliers at the bar..." She extended her left hand to offer a handshake as she pulled away from the doorjam. "I think it's great that so many people are concerned about Maltak, even after what happened to Professor Sunderliss."
