| I like to consider myself a pretty experienced online role player. I've contributed to the administration of numerous OTBRPGS (online text based role playing games) and I've participated in many, many more than that. So, I thought I'd write up some general guidelines here, which could become rules if people like them.
*The basics, don't play other's characters without permission, don't argue with mods, etcetera.
*Keep it as clean as Mookie keeps the comic. No strong swearing, but gratuitous violence is acceptable in cases of extreme fighting.
*Absolutely NO characters from the comic. We're playing in Mookie's world, not with his characters.
*Don't make characters any more powerful than what is demonstrated in the comic. Role playing isn't about having the most powerful character, it's about being as real as possible.
*For continuity's sake, we should try to keep up with the comic's timeline. That means you shouldn't role play ging to the Oblivion Folder concert, because that's over. Right now, issues you might run into are "A fight down at the new house" if you live in Barthis. Or maybe "Zomg, who will be the new headmaster/mistress" if you're a student at the arcane academy.
I think these guidelines will help us all enjoy playing more, what do you think? _________________ "Bears have penises. They can stick it in butts." ~LS |

| I like it. One suggestion, though;
-Once an RP is started, it doesn't have to follow the continuing timeline of the comic. It will act something like a "What if this happened instead" rather than follow the orthadox DD plotline.
(Btw, this is ONLY a suggestion. The only time I'd like to step in as Admin is when there's a problem.) _________________

| I would agree. We shouldn't try to "hurry up so we can keep up with mookie" though we shouldn't still be talking about the headmaster/mistress elections a year from now.
I think this is going to work out great. I'm gonna write up a character. _________________ "Bears have penises. They can stick it in butts." ~LS |

| So here's a question--do you guys want a plot?
In my experience, RPs with plots last much longer, but they also require more administration. somebody has to keep people from deviating too far from the plot, etcetera. _________________ "Bears have penises. They can stick it in butts." ~LS |

| I prefer one with... more of a basic story than a plot. Enough to get people up and going, without confining us to "you have to do this and this." Something basic that we can expand on, or explore. Something character-driven... am I making any sense? _________________ "When most people agree with you, worry." Rappaport, 1981 |

| So for example...
Plot Point 1) Instructors offer extra credit to students who take part in an expedition to a rock quarry in the west, where a large number of magical stones have been discovered.
Plot Point 2) Our characters just happen to be the ones who volunteer
Plot Point 3) Something bad happens at the quarry.
Plot Point 4) Characters overcome obstacle, growing closer in the process.
Then we'll come up with a new plot when the first is done.
(Note that this isn't exactly what I'd propose as a plot. Points 2 - 4 work, but point 1 isn't coming to me atm.) _________________ "Bears have penises. They can stick it in butts." ~LS |

| I'm thinking more of a: (example plot)
Plot Point 1)Instructors offer extra credit to students who take part in an expedition to a rock quarry in the west, where a large number of magical stones have been discovered.
Plot Point 2) Our characters just happen to be the ones who volunteer
Plot Point 3) Something bad happens at the quarry.
Plot Point 4) From that something bad, we uncover a greater conspiracy
Plot Point 5) Make the rest up as we go along.
just enough of a story to get us to where we need to be at the beginning, get our characters together, and so on, then kinda let it free roam. This has worked for me in the past, provided there's a small group. I dislike having a sort of "GM" in these type of games that lays out where we have to go, or what we have to do. Let us deviate from the plot, if we'd like. We'll come up with a new one soon enough. Of course, this sort of "make-it-up-as-you-go" storytelling doesn't work for everyone, so I'll wait, see who else joins, and get their input. _________________ "When most people agree with you, worry." | So you're suggesting sort of a "plot jumpstarter," with just enough plot to give us a half dozen pages worth of posts, and figuring by then we'll have enough of a bearing on our situation that we can make it up as we go.
Sounds fun, I look forward to it. _________________ "Bears have penises. They can stick it in butts." ~LS |

| Exactly! It's worked for me in the past. (One such roleplay is two years and running, though I quit after about 6 months there.) Wait for another person or two to join, then we'll be off! _________________ "When most people agree with you, worry." Rappaport, 1981 |

| 2 years, very nice! I've been doing this for 5 years and I've never seen one last THAT long. Then again, maybe it's just the groups I usually play with. =P _________________ "Bears have penises. They can stick it in butts." ~LS |

Good idea.

So far I'm with you 100%

Not really. It's about playing a character as that character, realistic or not. I have a diceless RP game on the Wizards of the Coast forum that's been up for over a year, and my character is insanely strong. Yet still an extremely well-developed and multi-faceted character. Unless everyone is going to play in the exact same game, I see no reason for this. If someone wants a high-powered RP game, let them.

Again, only if everyone is supposed to travel from game to game with the same characters. If this turns into a forum with many seperate game threads, I see no reason to have this rule, as it restricts possibilities that could be quite fun. Consider them flashbacks if you want, but don't ban them.

I see some as good, but many as needlessly restrictive. Course, I may be wrong about how this is going to be set up, but if it's like all the other forums I've seen, it's going to be many seperate games going on at once. And you can allow more freedom that way. If someone wants a god-power level game to take place at the Oblivion Folder Concert, or wants to battle through the War in Hell, I say let them.

You're right only because I worded what I was saying poorly. What I was trying to say is, Role Playing isn't about winning. It's about portraying interesting characters in an honest fashion, and seeing where they end up. Obviously it means different things to different people, but that's the general idea.

This is more of a guideline than a rule, and I meant for it to be applied to the RP that we were planning when I started this thread (the only RP currently being played).
If somebody wants to do a flashback, or even a flashforward, I really don't care. I just thought it would be a good idea for us to try and keep in roughly the same time frame as the comic in the RP we were planning. _________________ "Bears have penises. They can stick it in butts." ~LS |
