| I'ved one play-by-forum role playing, and chatroom gaming too. My experience is that forum gaming requires a lot of waiting between posts and following up for newcommers to participate. I propose an idea.
Many RPGs are run using IRC chat (see otherworlds IRC server) (http://www.otherworlders.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php)
Pros: DD RPG can be run on IRC for a bit more real-time RPing. The game master can open various chat-boxes for separate places in game. Several people at once can run the game.
The cons I can think of are learning to use IRC, finding a free IRC chat program, and when to run the game so people different time zones could play.
What do people think about this? Any other pros and cons? |

| Pros for forum RPGing:
The posts tend to be a lot longer and more detailed, and that, in my opinion, is what makes or breaks an RP.
Also, you can do it at your own pace without leaving someone behind. _________________

| | I can't see a chat working out as well. It's true there's a lot of waiting on a forum, but it allows all who want to participate to do so. |

| I've done both chat and forum posting, and I find that they work well for different types of RPG. Forums work better for a "story-telling" type, where detail and story reign, while chats seem to work better for a "hack and slash action" type, with less story, and more action.
Just my POV. _________________ "When most people agree with you, worry." Rappaport, 1981 |

| I do both, and I think it could work well on both.
I've been in VERY plot heavy freeform games on IRC. I've also seen people who will type up page-long posts in chat. It's nice to not have to wait, and it makes conversations flow a little better. It also lends towards smoother action.
Forum posts DO have a tendency to be more detailed, and allow for you to post when you want, even if nobody else is around. _________________ The man with the shades.
