Also, not "old woman." "Old" would imply the woman could be the man's mother, and that falls in MILF-land. "Cougar" just means she has 5-10 years on you. Though I'm no expert on slang, so don't take my word for it.

Men who like women typically prefer younger women. For a woman to go after men younger than herself, I think that she must be a hunting cat with nerves of steel. The nickname (which I hadn't heard before) makes sense to me.

"Cougar" has always meant "middle aged or older" 'round here. Usually women in their 40s or so, picking up guys in their early 20s.

Also, a quick web search confirms this to be regional. Canadian slang, so you down south would probably not have heard it that often.
