what is a geek??

nerd I think is meant for extreme book-smarts. Like someone who is extremely knowledgeable in one topic such as science (computer or otherwise), math, history (could be a specific part, like WWII), or something of that like.

Geek is for someone who is interested in what could be a variety of things: webcomics, anime, manga, technology, D&D, conventions, cosplay, art, or something like that.

Something that could help:
"Geeking-out" (ge-ke-ing - oh-oot) verb. - To become extremely excited over a topic
"Nerding-out" (Ne-er-d-ing - oh-oot) verb. - To continue talking in-depth for a long period of time on a topic that you specify in. This is especially true when the situation does not call for so much information and/or the topic is over the heads of most of the listeners.

I think that should do it.

A geek is anyone who obsesses over a form of entertainment that most "mainstream" people do not obsess about and may have never even heard of. "mainstream" includes members of the culture (in high school terms, preps and jocks, as well as gangstas) and of the counter-culture (i.e. goths, emos, punks, hippies etc).

A nerd, by contrast, is anyone who obsesses over a type of information that most "mainstream" people do not obsess about, such as history, physics, chemistry, math, star wars trivia etc.

One can be both a geek and a nerd in the same subject (for example, Star Wars can be geeky in that the person obsesses over the entertainment aspect, and nerdy in that the person obsesses over information about the universe, but someone who loves Star Wars does not necessarily know how to build a lightsaber, and someone who knows how to build a lightsaber does not necessarily dress up as Darth Vader for Halloween, although having one increases the likelyhood of having the other).
